Clavell tower is the most obvious landmark on the Jurassic coastline above the hidden gem that is Kimmeridge Bay. The Dorset village of Kimmeridge is a magical place, home to the wonderful Etches Collection fossil museum and excellent Clavells Restaurant
A very interesting tower when you arrive and look up from the bay. An interesting history and luckily was moved further back to ensure it doesn't erode off the cliff and lost forever. You can hire this to stay in which I will do one day.
This is on the SW Coast Path and I last visited many years ago when it was a ruin. Now it's privately owned by the Landmark Trust & you can stay here. Would love to do so, but the steep, narrow & sometimes inclined steps that can be muddy & slippy make access tricky enough without also carrying luggage (even a large rucksack). The climb is worth it though as the views are beautiful on a clear day. There is a car park at the bottom of the steps at Kimmeridge bay (fee payable). Toilets in the car park & fresh drinking water.
Very steep and uneven steps leading up to the tower. Well worth the view from the top. Less able people would need to strongly consider the steepness before starting up the climb.
If you want a beautiful and quite as well as interesting place to wonder then Kimmeridge beach and Clavell tower is the place to go. Loads of walking, stunning views, fossil hunting and rock pooling. Great for families, picnics and hiking.
Landmark Trust accommodation...shame its not open to the public more...a lovely addition to the landscape above Kimmeridge Bay...picturesque to walk by on South West Coast path.
The Clavell Tower at Kimmeridge Bay in Wareham, Dorset is well worth the walk to.
It was built around 1830 by Reverend John Richards Clavell as a folly.
You can also stay there for a few days for a quiet break
The views are absolutely stunning around Kimmeridge Bay and beyond.
Also why not visit the Wild Seas Centre while you are there the kids will love it.
Spectacular but weather was a problem with steep, muddy steps. It would be nice if we were allowed to drive up the track beside the tower to unload luggage, food etc. Views compromised in first few days but it was snug. Steep cliff drop is dangerous for dogs.
